On a recent visit to the Durham District School Board in Ontario, Canada, Leaders in Holdsworth’s District Leadership Program witnessed Durham’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in action. Our groups toured four schools, including Viola Desmond Primary School in Ajax and Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering (pictured in the slideshow). Canada is very welcoming to immigrants and as those communities grow, students of color are often the majority in schools where the faculty is mostly white. From curriculum to school policies and practices, faculty and staff strive to make every student feel valued and celebrated for their unique identity and background. They also prioritize uncovering their own biases to ensure they are not standing in the way of student success. Top leaders at DDSB also shared how they recruit and develop diverse leaders into their pipeline.
