Alumni Forum Webinar – HOLA Project

November 5, 2025

In a recent Holdsworth alumni webinar, CLP graduates Principal Charla Wilson and Bilingual Specialist Cynthia Sullivan from Mahaffey Elementary in Klein ISD shared the inspiring journey of the HOLA Project—a grassroots initiative designed to support emerging bilingual students and their families. HOLA, which stands for Helping Others Learn and Achieve, began as an extension of Parent University and has grown into a dynamic, campus-wide effort to foster inclusion, connection, and academic success.

Watch the webinar recording or review their slides and resources to learn how the team has implemented several efforts to support EB students and families including:

  • Family Engagement with Purpose: The HOLA team started small—with surveys to understand family needs—and built targeted programming around homework help, technology access, and school communication tools. Their goal: make families feel informed, valued, and empowered.
  • Bridging Cultural and Linguistic Gaps: Recognizing the transition challenges bilingual students face, especially when moving to intermediate school, HOLA activities now focus on integrating monolingual and bilingual students through shared experiences like “Friendly Fridays” and cultural celebrations.
  • Empowering Through Leadership: The HOLA Committee, made up of teachers, specialists, and administrators, drives the work through subcommittees focused on announcements, classroom partnerships, and student-led initiatives. Their collaborative model ensures sustainability and growth.
  • Celebrating Identity and Voice: Events like Culture Night and TELPAS & Tacos give students and families opportunities to showcase their heritage, learn about school systems, and engage in meaningful dialogue. These moments build trust and pride across the school community.
  • Measuring Impact: Mahaffey Elementary has seen tangible results, including improved attendance and academic growth. The team attributes this success to deepened family involvement and intentional communication.

The webinar highlighted how starting small—with a clear vision and authentic relationships—can lead to transformative change. The HOLA Project is a testament to what’s possible when educators listen, collaborate, and lead with heart.
